ABSTRACT:

In this study, the effects of shearing speed on shearing strength parameters (c and ϕ) on the poorly graded medium-fine sand soils were investigated. The shear box test has a wide range of use in determining shearing strength parameters on sandy soils. For this purpose, shear box tests under two different conditions, being both saturated and dry, were carried out on loose sand sample of poorly graded medium-fine sand in the laboratory. Shearing strength parameters (c and ϕ) were determined with regard to the variation of the cutting speed for both conditions, keeping cutting speeds of the samples different (0.25, 0.50, 1, 2, 4 mm/m) and the values obtained were compared. For saturated sand samples, values of cohesion (c) and internal friction angle (ϕ) were found to stand between 0.04-0.11 kg/cm2 and 230-360 respectively while the same values for dry sand samples were found to be 0.02-0.12 kg/cm2 and 100-380.
