ABSTRACT:

Root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne sp.) is one of the major problem in the vegetable crops especially tomato growing areas of the NWFP. In the present studies, efforts were made to find out the efficacy of Tichoderma harzianum in suppressing the population of root-knot nematodes. Eleven different localities viz., Sakhakot, Dargai, Jabban, Thana, Zarakhella, Parrai, Goratey, Matta, Barikot, Charbagh and Tindodag were surveyed and T. harzianum was isolated from Zarakhella, Swat. Culture filtrates of T. harzianum showed strong nematicidal effect against Meloidogyne sp. The percent inhibition of egg hatching was directly proportional to the concentration of the filtrate, 90 % in standard solution of culture filtrate, 79 % in 1:1 dilution, 31 % in 1:10 and 9 % in 1: 100 dilutions. Only 5 % larval mortality was observed in the sterile distilled water used as control.
